een afbeelding van het logo van de Internationale Korfbal FederatieIn 1933 the International Korfball Federation (IKF) was founded (originally as the Federation Internationale de Korfbal) by the korfball unions of the Netherlands and Belgium in an attempt to stimulate the internationalisation of korfball. The IKF now has 51 national federation members. There are approximately 200,000 active korfball players in the world.

Since 1993 the IKF has been formally recognised by the IOC. Korfball is however not an Olympic demonstration sport but is part of the World Games which is the third branch of the Olympic ideal. At the moment korfball is played in 51 countries. At the end of 2007 a minimum of 50 active countries were required to maintain IOC status. (source: Wikipedia)
